The Gawala Union has announced a price increase for milk, yogurt, and butter across Rawalpindi district, effective Friday. Prices will rise by Rs20 per liter and kilogram, respectively. Consequently, the price of open milk will increase to Rs220 per liter and yogurt to Rs240 per kilogram. Previously, milk was priced at Rs200 per liter and yogurt at Rs220 per kilogram. Butter will also see a significant rise, with its price jumping from Rs1,000 per kilogram to Rs1,200 per kilogram. These new prices contrast sharply with the official rates, which are Rs190 per liter for milk and Rs200 per kilogram for yogurt.
Khawar Chaudhary, Secretary of the Gawala Union, attributed the hike to soaring buffalo fodder costs. “Prices for all components of buffalo fodder have surged by 500% to 700%. The cost of a buffalo has risen to Rs0.8 million, and fodder prices have jumped by 700%. Given these conditions, maintaining old milk prices has become unsustainable,” he said.
This increase is expected to spark further debate and concern among consumers, who are already struggling with inflation’s impact on daily expenses. Households will need to adjust their budgets to manage the rising costs of essential items like milk and yogurt.
