Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left Dhaka following violent clashes, a source close to the leader informed AFP.

The source revealed that Sheikh Hasina and her sister have vacated Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence, and relocated to a safer location. The source also mentioned that Hasina had planned to record a speech but was unable to do so.

This development comes after the announcement that Bangladesh’s army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, is preparing to address the nation. The announcement follows violent clashes the previous day, which resulted in 98 deaths, making it the deadliest incident in weeks of ongoing anti-government protests.

Earlier, local media in Bangladesh reported that thousands of people stormed Sheikh Hasina’s official residence. The protests, which began last month over issues related to government job quotas, have escalated into widespread unrest across the country.
