In response to the ongoing heat wave and escalating demands of Islamabad’s residents, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has unveiled plans to augment the daily water supply by an additional six million gallons.
During a meeting convened to assess the water supply status in the federal capital, the Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) issued these directives. The session saw the presence of senior officers from the Water Supply Wing, emphasizing a collaborative effort to address the pressing needs of Islamabad’s residents.
“In light of the heightened water demands from citizens during the summer months, an extra six million gallons per day (MGD) will be drawn from Simli Dam,” declared the Chairman. Additionally, he instructed for the extension of water supply duration in densely populated sectors and areas to guarantee ample availability for residents.
To ensure the effective execution of these strategies, the Chairman mandated the cancellation of all leave for staff within the water supply wing. Furthermore, the tanker service will be placed on high alert round the clock to promptly address any emergent water requirements, while all reported pipeline leakages must be swiftly rectified.
In addressing Islamabad’s long-standing water challenges, the meeting emphasized the urgency of implementing sustainable solutions. The Chairman directed immediate action on projects pertaining to the Shahdara, Tarbela, Chiniot, and Khanpur dams, with the goal of providing enduring resolutions to the city’s water supply issues.
Expressing dismay over the reported theft of approximately 40 percent of water from the Khanpur Dam to the Sangjani Plant Canal, the Chairman underscored the complexity of the issue. He noted that control over the canal falls under various provincial authorities, whereas previously managed by WAPDA. “A proposal must be formulated within three days to engage in discussions with WAPDA and other pertinent organizations to address this challenge,” he added.
