The Meteorological Office warned of impending heatwave conditions across Pakistan, notably in Punjab and Sindh, starting May 21 and escalating to severe levels from May 23 to 27 due to high-pressure systems in the upper atmosphere.

During May 21-23, daytime temperatures in Sindh and Punjab are forecasted to rise 04 to 06°C above average, increasing to 06 to 08°C above normal between May 23 and 27. Similarly, in Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan, daytime temperatures are expected to be 04 to 06°C higher than usual from May 21 to 27.

The Meteorological Office also noted the expected influence of a shallow westerly wave over the upper regions of Pakistan from the evening of May 16. As a result:

  • Balochistan could face dust storms, thunderstorms, and isolated rainfall across several districts from May 16 evening to 19.
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may experience similar weather patterns in multiple districts from May 16 evening to 19.
  • Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are likely to witness rain, wind, and thunderstorms in various areas from May 16 evening to 19.
  • Punjab and Islamabad may encounter dust storms, thunderstorms, and isolated rainfall in various cities from May 16 evening to 18.
  • Sindh might see dust storms, thunderstorms, and isolated rainfall in specific regions on May 17 and 18.
