Pakistan’s Large-Scale Manufacturing Sector Expands By 2% In March 2024

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the output of Large-Scale Manufacturing Industries (LSMI) rose by 2.04 percent in March 2024 compared to March 2023, but declined by 9.35 percent compared to February 2024.

The Large Scale Manufacturing Sector has exhibited a growth of -0.10 percent during July-March 2023-24 compared to the same period last year.

Provisional quantum indices for Large Scale Manufacturing Industries (LSMI) for March 2024, based on the 2015-16 base year, have been compiled using the latest data from source agencies. The provisional quantum index number (QIM) for March 2024 is 115.53, while the QIM for July-March 2023-24 is 117.88.

The primary contributors to the overall growth of -0.10 percent include:

  • Food (0.31 percent)
  • Tobacco (-0.66 percent)
  • Textile (-1.47 percent)
  • Garments (0.77 percent)
  • Paper & Board (-0.05 percent)
  • Petroleum Products (0.31 percent)
  • Chemicals (0.60 percent)
  • Pharmaceuticals (1.08 percent)
  • Iron & Steel Products (-0.11 percent)
  • Electrical Equipment (-0.24 percent)
  • Automobiles (-1.01 percent)
  • Furniture (0.60 percent)

In July-March 2023-24 compared to July-March 2022-23, production increased in food, wearing apparel, coke & petroleum products, chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, machinery and equipment, and furniture. However, it decreased in tobacco, textile, paper & board, non-metallic mineral products, iron & steel products, electrical equipment, automobiles, and other transport equipment.

Sectors experiencing growth during July-March 2023-24 compared to July-March 2022-23 include food, wearing apparel, leather products, wood products, coke and petroleum products, chemicals, chemicals products, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, rubber products, machinery and equipment, and furniture.

Sectors witnessing a decline during July-March 2023-24 compared to July-March 2022-23 include beverages, tobacco, textile, paper and board, non-metallic mineral products, iron and steel products, fabricated metal, computer, electronics and optical products, electrical equipment, automobiles, and other transport equipment.
