Saturday: Mason Greenwood forward Manchester United has been charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive behavior in London.
The 21-year-old footballer will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court today upon facing three charges by the same woman.
The allegations against Greenwood first started in January after the videos and images went viral online.
Although the player was on bail, he was arrested on Saturday for breaching the conditions.
Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, Janet Potter said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.”
“All three counts relate to the same complainant. Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West´s complex casework unit authorized the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.”
Greenwood was suspended from playing or training with Manchester United just a few hours after the allegations about him surfaced.
Sports brand Nike also suspended and later terminated their sponsorship deal with the player.
Greenwood’s removal from active squads in FIFA 2022 was also confirmed by Electronic Arts.
The international player made his United debut in 2019, played 129 times for the club, and scored 35 goals.
Greenwood also signed a deal in February 2021 that kept him at Old Trafford until 2025.
