The tennis legend announces she is planning to retire from tennis sometime after the 2022 US Open.
The American athlete, Serena Williams announced on Tuesday that she was “evolving away from tennis”.
She penned a cover essay for Vogue to bid farewell to tennis. She wrote ‘Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair,’ Williams wrote. ‘If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity.’
Considered the ‘GOAT’ in women’s tennis, the 40-years old champion has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles. Her first win came when she was just 17, in 1999 at the U.S. Open.
Williams has been trying for another child and has a 4-year-old daughter, Olympia, with her husband Alexis Ohanian. In addition to expanding her family, Williams is planning to work on her venture capital firm, Serena Ventures.
Williams wrote “I’m terrible at goodbyes, the world’s worst. But please know that I am more grateful for you than I can ever express.”
