The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has declared that cellular services will undergo a temporary suspension in designated districts throughout Punjab and Balochistan on April 21st and 22nd, coinciding with the forthcoming by-elections.
Implemented under the directive of the Ministry of Interior, this measure is intended to safeguard the integrity and security of the electoral process.
It’s worth noting that the functionality of the electoral process relies on internet availability, enabling the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to maintain connectivity with polling stations post-counting. Previous instances of miscommunication resulted in widespread rigging during recent elections.
The choice to halt mobile communications signifies a precautionary stance in upholding public order and mitigating the potential misuse of mobile networks during the electoral phase.
This suspension aligns with broader security initiatives aimed at enabling a just and peaceful voting procedure, as stated by the PTA.
Residents in the impacted districts are encouraged to prepare accordingly and rely on alternative communication channels for updates during this suspension period.
The PTA has pledged to reinstate services promptly once safety and appropriateness are ensured following the conclusion of the by-elections.
