Friday: A man on the run from police swam into the sea at North Wollongong Beach in Australia to avoid getting arrested for stealing a wallet.

The man, Dewayne Dean, believed to be in his 30s, ran down the hill towards the ocean at North Beach after leaving his car. Dean has reportedly stolen a women’s wallet in Tampa Bay and was pulled over by the police before he made a run for it.

The thief swam 200 feet away into the sea to escape arrest. However, police kept a watch on him even with a chopper and Dean had to surrender.

According to the Police Department, Dewayne Dean has a prior criminal record.

The story went viral when the picture of the thief with his hands up with a police helicopter over him was shared by the Tampa Police Department on social media with the caption “You can’t run from the chopper!”

Hundreds of spectators lined the shore to get a glimpse of the dramatic scene that seems straight out of a heist movie.
