The runners-up for Karachi’s local body election, Jamat-e-Islami (JI), has announced countrywide protests against “rigging” of the elections.
JI has announced protests in all major cities of Pakistan and has also rejected the results of the Karachi LG polls.
The results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the winner of Karachi’s LG polls is PPP which has won 93 union council seats, JI has won 86 seats, while it is followed by PTI, which has managed to bag 40 seats union council seats.
PML-N has acquired 7 seats while independent candidates won 3 seats and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam acquired 3 seats as well
JI’s party chief, Siraj ul-Haq, said the delay in the release of results by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was raising doubts and some ROs are “trying to change the results”.
Jamat-e-Islami’s senior leader and chief Karachi, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said, “We are not getting the results from the returning officers (RO) despite over 18 hours of delay since the conclusion of polling.”
In a statement, Siraj stated that “JI has now emerged as the dominant party during the local body elections.”
He said that the findings provided by the party’s polling representatives demonstrated that JI had won the majority.
“We think that changes have been made to the election results for JI and other political parties. I urge the populace and workers to protest in the nation’s major cities ” he added.
