What are Birth Control Pills?

Birth control pills are oral medicines that are used to prevent unwanted pregnancies. They are also referred to as hormonal contraceptives, combination pills, and simply as “the pill”. Birth control pills are easily available in Pakistan and can be bought from pharmacies and local medical stores but most of them require a prescription. Contraceptives are one of the most popular methods of birth control and are used by an estimated number of 100 million women around the world to stop pregnancies.

Types of Birth Control Pills:

There are 2 types of birth control pills that are available including:

1. Progestin-Only Pills aka “The Mini Pill”:

A progestin-only pill (POP), also referred to as “the mini pill.” Is a type of birth control pill that only contains progestin and no estrogen. Since a lot of women are unable to use estrogen due to health issues, these progestin pills are the best option for them. These mini pills are not only used by women to stop pregnancies but are also taken by women who are breastfeeding as they are known to affect the production of breast milk.

POP is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy if they are taken properly without a mistake or a gap. The effect rate drops to 93% if there are any mistakes in the consumption of these pills. They are also not helpful against STIs.

2. Combination Pills aka “The Pill”:

The combined oral contraceptive pill or COCP, commonly known as “the pill” is another type of birth control pill that uses a combination of both estrogen and progestin to stop a pregnancy. You have to take a COPC at the same time every day and daily for a period of over 28 days although you should consult with your doctor beforehand to find the plan perfect for you.

Combination pills are more than 99% effective when used properly however, the effect rate drops to 91% when there are some mistakes made in taking the medicine such as timing errors or missing a day in between. Just like Progestin-only pills, combination pills are also ineffective against STIs.
