The federal government has announced a refund for excess charges on this month’s electricity bills, providing relief to consumers, as reported by a private news channel. The government has instructed that a reduced tariff be applied to the additional units billed under the pro-rata system.

According to the new decision, the tariff for additional units under pro-rata billing will be reduced. Protected category consumers will now pay 13 rupees per unit instead of 27 rupees. Excess charges will be credited on current bills, and any overpaid amounts will be refunded. Additionally, NEPRA has removed penalties for late bill payments.

Last month, the pro-rata system led to extra billing, prompting investigations by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The probe uncovered missing reading dates on bills and a lack of clarity from Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) regarding this issue.
