Shahid Khan Afridi, a former flashy all-rounder, has been named the men’s team’s interim chief selector.
An interim selection committee has been established by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) recently-elected management body.
Afridi, who just announced his resignation to join the board while appearing on a local news channel, will preside over the selection committee, with Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum serving as members. The convener will be Haroon Rashid, a member of the PCB management committee.
The committee has been tasked with examining the Test squad that was declared by the panel chaired by Mohammad Wasim prior to his removal as chief selector as part of an overhaul at the PCB. For now, the appointment is limited for the forthcoming home series against New Zealand.
Najam Sethi, the chair of the PCB management committee, expressed his hope for “brave and daring judgments” from the new committee in a statement, saying, “Shahid Afridi has been an attacking cricketer who played cricket without fear. He has played cricket for almost 20 years, has appeared in all formats with notable success, and most importantly has consistently +encouraged and backed up fresh talent.
Afridi was originally named to the management committee but declined, stating he wanted to concentrate on his humanitarian foundation and wouldn’t be able to perform the job right. On the other hand, he joined via a video link the new management committee’s first meeting on Friday.
