Sukoon by Hassan & Roshaan ft. Shae Gill, a song that topped the charts and also scored a spot in Spotify’s trending list, recently received backlash for its music video.
The music video was deemed ‘highly inappropriate’ with people claiming it has a ‘lesbian theme’.
The song is performed by budding artists Hassan & Roshaan, who also had a song of their featured in Miss Marvel, along with Shae Gill, who became famous due to her debut Pasoori in Coke Studio.
The music video and the song itself are about finding peace in solitude as well as covering the concepts f longing. The ‘moral brigade’ did not see it that way and the Director Saad Yratta received a lot of backlashes.
The director has now responded to the comments in an interview, where he talks about the concept behind the music video,
“My intention was to create a visual which could manifest the title ‘sukoon’. A goldfish, in isolation, and Shae the observer, the siren. It’s the ultimate metaphor for a beautifully isolated life; a goldfish in a bowl.”
The video shows the artist duo, Shae Gill, and the model Altish Yousaf, who portrays goldfish in a river and evokes a sense of solitude and loneliness.
While discussing the particular scene that sparked the debate, the director stated, “What is more beautiful, and lonelier than a goldfish, in a bowl? Alone, and unbothered until the occasional observer admires its beauty and causes a lapse in the peace.”
Saad Yratta concluded the conversation by saying, “The great thing about art is, that in the mainstream it becomes reflective of ongoing social conversations, regardless of the open-ended nature of the visual.”
